The Road to Somewhere Else marks a departure in Sunday’s writing. This collection is an intellectual exploration of family dysfunction, human displacement, and the pursuit of self-preservation, concisely communicated in the characters’ voices, poems, and essays.
Six eclectic short stories provide readers with an intimate relationship with characters enduring circumstances created by others, the devastating impact of dysfunctional families, and the demise of a dystopian friendship. The characters are forced to decide their future.
The collection includes a small sampling of succinct poetry that echoes the book’s stories and essays.
In the opening essay, Dear Mystic, Connecticut the author shares her newfound love of this enchanting village. At the same time, Sunday takes readers on a personal journey of self-exploration as she searches for her creative spiritual home. The second essay progresses Sunday’s discussion of solitude, work, and the constant encroachment of digital technology. In the final essay, Cape Cod, Sunday undertakes a philosophical conversation as she imagines herself walking along the shores of Cape Cod, like previous writers, searching for creative seclusion and human independence.
Reviews
In The Road to Somewhere Else, Tiffany Sunday challenges our recognitions of, and attitudes towards, expected and unexpected destinations. In serial fleeting and energetic depictions of real and figurative roads and pathways, she confronts us with experiences of the destinations, both anticipated and not, to which they lead—all the while managing to capture the gossamer of their tenuous coexistence in the human mind. By doing so, she identifies roadblocks on the map to “somewhere else” and invites readers to do the same.

Tiffany Sunday has been intrigued by the presence of Mystic, CT. Every denizen of our humble riverside village would recognize her description of the temporal permanence that stitches Mystic together over the centuries. Recommended.
